Mr. Luukko brings over 35 years of experience in the sports management and marketing industries to SSM.
He currently serves as Executive Chairman of the Florida Panthers, a National Hockey League (“NHL”) franchise which he joined in February 2015. During his first year with the team, working with ownership and team management, Mr Luukko has helped the franchise significantly improve business operations in tandem with their “on ice” performance.
Prior to joining the Florida Panthers, he was President and COO of Comcast-Spectacor where he was responsible for the creation of new business opportunities in facility management, sports ownership, ticketing, and food and concessions operations. He also oversaw all operations of the Philadelphia Flyers NHL franchise, and served as a member of the NHL’s Board of Governors.
In addition to his business accomplishments, under Mr. Luukko’s leadership, Comcast-Spectacor helped the City of Philadelphia garner national attention and awareness by attracting several high-profile events, including the 2000 Republican National Convention, the 2000 NCAA Women’s Final Four, the 2001 NCAA Men’s East Regionals, the 2001 and 2002 X-Games, the 2002 NBA All-Star Weekend, the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Gymnastics, the 2011 NCAA Wrestling Championships, the 2014 NCAA Frozen Four, and numerous other sports and entertainment events. He worked for Comcast-Spectacor for 28 years. Prior to becoming President and COO, he served as President of The Spectrum, Vice President of Spectacor Management Group’s Western Region, Assistant General Manager of the Providence Civic Center, and Director of Marketing for the New Haven Coliseum. A recognized leader in the facility management industry, Mr. Luukko received the City of Hope’s Tri-State Labor Award in 2000. He also received the prestigious Harold J. VanderZwaag Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Sports Management Program of the University of Massachusetts in 2002 for his accomplishments in the field of sports management.
He currently serves on the Boards of Directors for the Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Congress, Operation Lift Hope, and the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation, and serves as an Orange Bowl Committee Member. Mr. Luukko is a hockey player, hockey coach, and hockey parent. He is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts. He and his wife Casey are the proud parents of three children, Nick, Dana, and Max. Peter’s son Nick was drafted by the Flyers in the sixth round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
